Abu Dhabi welcomes one of the world's most powerful data centers: the Emirates accelerate their focus on artificial intelligence
The United Arab Emirates have taken the next step in their quest for global technological leadership. Through a strategic partnership between Emirati conglomerate G42 and OpenAI, the government of Abu Dhabi has just announced the creation of what will become one of the world's largest data centers.
Dubbed "Project Stargate", this digital mega-complex will be located in the capital of the Emirates, and should eventually reach a colossal capacity of 1 gigawatt - a figure unprecedented in the region, and among the highest on a global scale.
Digital power for sovereign AI
The first phase of the project, already underway, will have an operational capacity of 200 megawatts by 2026, the energy equivalent of several hundred thousand servers. The center is designed to support the training, hosting and deployment of the most advanced artificial intelligence models, including those designed by OpenAI (ChatGPT, Codex, DALL-E...).
This partnership is in line with the Emirates' stated aim of controlling critical artificial intelligence resources locally, without depending entirely on Western or Asian technology giants. By relying on a sovereign, high-performance infrastructure, the country is giving itself the means to produce, secure and export its own AI innovations.
A strong signal for investors and the technology sector
With this project, the Emirates confirm their status as a major digital hub between Europe, Asia and Africa. The establishment of a center of this scale in Abu Dhabi is already attracting the attention of leading technology companies, venture capitalists and deep learning researchers.
It's also a lever for economic diversification: by becoming a home for the AI, cybersecurity, predictive analytics and cloud computing industries, the country is anticipating a post-oil future structured around the knowledge economy.
